Hazuki's History: Hazuki isn't a normal girl by human standards; as a matter-of-fact, she is a pure-blooded vampire. In her youth, Hazuki was promised by her mother that they would be reunited in Japan when she had been left in Germany, in the Schwartz Quelle castle. Years had passed without any word, and Hazuki soon became very lonely. Around that time was when she met Kouhei Morioka (Kouhei Mido in the manga), who had visited the aforementioned castle on a photographing assignment for his job; once seeing Hazuki atop the castle, he wanted her to model for him.

When he had snuck into the castle again and found her, he asked her if she would do as such; she agreed, but as long as he would do her a favor in return: to allow her to kiss him. However, the way a kiss is viewed in the vampires' world is quite different from a humans' kiss; once Hazuki had sucked Kouhei's blood, their pact was sealed and he was to become her slave. Unfortunately, Hazuki's kiss didn't work the way she had wanted it to, and to her extreme displeasure Kouhei was still the same even after she used her charm, known as her hypnotic eyes, on him! Despite the small setback, Kouhei was able to free Hazuki from her confinement to the castle and she went to live with him and his family in Japan.

Living with Kouhei's family wasn't easy for Hazuki at first. She didn't quite trust Kouhei or his grandfather Ryuuhei, fearing that she would be left alone again like she had been at the castle. With Kouhei's help, Hazuki was able to meet up with her mother and was informed that she would meet someone that she would fall in love with; once that happened, she shouldn't kiss the person that she loves. Once Hazuki eventually realized what that meant, she knew that her mother's advice had come far too late. Unfortunately, Hazuki's vampire kind desired her to return to the castle, starting with Count Kinkel who used her desire to see her mother again against her.

With help from Kouhei, Ryuuhei, Kouhei's cousin Seiji and fellow vampire Elfriede, Hazuki was able to kill the Count and return home. Just prior to their confrontations with the Count, Hazuki met the other members of the Mido family; specifically, Hikaru and Kaoru Mido, who were promised to wed Seiji and Kouhei when they grew up. Knowing this information doesn't help Hazuki get along that well with either Hikaru or Kaoru. Once they find out she's a vampire, they engaged in a fight with Hazuki that almost favored the twins until unexpected assistance from Elfriede. (She had been tracking Hazuki with the intent for her to willingly return to the castle, and Hazuki repeatedly kept saying that she wouldn't return; once Elfriede turned against the Count, she remained a true friend to Hazuki ever since.)

However, Hazuki, Hikaru and Kaoru eventually learned to trust each other thanks to some surprising events during a trip to the hospital that allowed Hazuki to show that she was more than just a 'demon girl' and Hikaru and Kaoru to show Hazuki that they didn't entirely hold a grudge against the vampire for claiming Kaoru's fiance as her slave. (Their name for Hazuki is still demon girl, as Hikaru herself admitted before they returned to Kyoto.)

The vampire clan, unfortunately, wouldn't stop their relentless attempts to bring Hazuki back to the fold, and one major reason was because of the knowledge that Hazuki was a Daywalker, a vampire who could withstand the sunlight and not die, unlike other vampires. Their next assault cost Hazuki and Kouhei their home, as well as the lives of Ryuuhei and Elfriede-or so they thought-and both of them had to go to the Mido shrine in the mountains, so Kouhei could become stronger and so Hazuki could remain safe from her vampire brethren; while there, Hazuki trained with Hikaru and Kaoru, her relationship with the Mido twins the same as usual-arguments between Hazuki and Hikaru, moments of anger and jealousy when it's mentioned that Kaoru is Kouhei's intended bride-to-be and not Hazuki's slave, etc.

Once a month, Hazuki was able to go up the mountain and kiss Kouhei, an act that Hikaru is not happy with whatsoever. Kaoru has even taken Hazuki's own style of wearing NekoMimi, or cat ears, by wearing her own set of cat ears as well as adding paws and a tail to the ensemble! Though when pressured by Hikaru to say that Kaoru was cute, Kouhei's beginning comments were usually stopped by a jealous Hazuki. Kaoru promised Kouhei before their departure from the mountaintop that next time he saw them, she would add whiskers to her cat-like style. (That sadly, was a bad choice to make; when Kaoru added the whiskers later on, she found that she couldn't remove them! Eventually the whiskers were removed and she didn't add them again. However, she said once that she has different pairs of paws and one set of paws is her hottie pair.)

Kouhei's training alone in the mountains isn't entirely fun for Hazuki; she misses him terribly despite knowing that he is training to get stronger for her. When the vampires attack the shrine, it is around this time that Hazuki meets her little half-sister Artemis, or Arte for short. It is around this time that Hazuki doesn't want anyone else to get hurt trying to protect her, especially Kouhei, who's training took on a negative tone when his sealed up powers of Jagon were fully released and he now viewed Hazuki's (possibly) dark future. Hazuki strikes a deal, which is agreed upon: if they promised to leave Kouhei and the Mido family alone for good, she would return to the castle.

Hikaru, Hazuki's guardian Shikigami Haiji (who was formerly Hazuki's mother's guardian until she was reassigned to look after Hazuki; the two have since become very close friends and Haiji promises to look after Kouhei since his mother is also gone.) and Yayoi Mido-master of Hikaru, Hazuki, Kaoru and Kouhei while they train-break into the castle to rescue Hazuki from her terrible fate; unlike the others Hikaru didn't promise to not break inside, since she had been captured in the previous attack. Eventually, Kouhei learned to master his Jagon and was able to successfully rescue Hazuki from the castle once again. Their task seemingly complete once again, they returned home.

Even though Hazuki knows they'll never completely be free of danger, she isn't afraid anymore because she has all of her friends watching out for her...and she has Kouhei by her side to help protect her. Though she now has to learn the responsibilities of being a big sister, as Ryuuhei has taken in Arte as well. However, she's off to a pretty good start as evidenced when she allows Arte to go with her while she walks Hikaru and Kaoru to the train station.


Hazuki's Personality: At the beginning of the series, Hazuki is basically viewed as a spoiled/selfish child who was the favored daughter in her family of vampires; an act that Arte was jealous of since their family went to such great lengths to retrieve her. When she had been rescued from the Schwartz Quelle castle by Kouhei, she had to learn to place her trust in others who, over time, truly did care for her well being.

Despite her selfish nature, she does care for others besides herself. Her desire to see her mother again was a major drive in the early parts of the series, as shown when the Count had used an image of her mother against her to lure her into a trap. Eventually, Hazuki accepted the fact that her mother was gone and that she wouldn't be coming back. Hazuki's relationship with Kouhei is shown quite frequently: they constantly argue with each other over seemingly trivial issues as well as major ones, but end up apologizing to each other later on.

Hazuki truly has deep feelings for Kouhei and is jealous of the fact that Kaoru is engaged to him; even though she repeatedly says that he's her slave and that he should obey her every command, she worries about him when he willingly puts himself in harm's way to protect her. When he's in the hospital due to being seriously injured by Hazuki, she shortens her own life by transferring some of her life force to Kouhei, thereby saving his life.

Hazuki's relationship with Hikaru, Kaoru and Haiji is like one between sisters; she gets along with the Mido twins well, despite the occasional arguments she has with Hikaru concerning Kouhei being promised to wed Kaoru as well as repeatedly insulting each other. (All three of them call Kouhei big brother, though Hazuki and Kaoru do so because they have feelings for him. Hikaru does so out of respect for him.) Haiji is very close to Hazuki, being bonded to her via a few strands of her hair and both are genuine friends. Though they'll occasionally have their spats as well.

Hazuki feels extreme guilt when the people she cares about put themselves at risk solely to protect her. She believes that she's a curse and it takes repeated talks, and rescues, from Kouhei for her to see that she's been accepted by the Mido clan as a member of their family. However, she has another personality that was placed in her mind by her vampire family to keep her under control named Luna. (Runa in the Japanese anime.) Luna has shown up a few times: once when Hazuki was captured by the Count and placed under a trance; while under that trance, Hazuki attacked and wounded Kouhei despite his attempts to free her. The next time Luna appeared was shortly after Hazuki killed the Count and she couldn't fully come to terms with herself. Both personalities gained control of Hazuki for a time until Kouhei admitted he cared about her and wanted to protect her. Hazuki now accepts Luna as another part of her personality, and remembers the memories of that experience.

Hazuki didn't get along with Arte at first due to the fact that Arte felt jealous of Hazuki receiving everything that she desired: attention from their father, the vampires' insistence that Hazuki be returned to the castle unharmed and Kouhei's determination to protect Hazuki. Eventually she realized that Arte was just like her, but at a younger age: lonely and not being able to trust others. After the final battle took place and Arte came to live with Kouhei and the others, Hazuki learned the responsibilities of being a big sister. So far, she's doing a pretty good job since she allowed Arte to travel with her while she drops off the twins at the train station - and then it was touched on during the special episode that takes place outside the main storyline, when Arte wanted Hazuki to focus on playing with her and it took a potentially dangerous situation for the two vampire sisters to get on the same page with each other.
